What kind of fruits can Pomeranians eat?

And that the Western world only eats around 10% of them?
I know – shocking, right?
It would take ages to go through the whole list.
That’s why we only focus on the most common fruits (think: bananas, oranges, grapes, and so forth).
Before we start:
Who am I? And why should you listen to what I have to say?
My name is Petya. I’m passionate about dogs and interested in their well-being.
I remember the day that my Mom gave Ejy a piece of banana (Ejy was my Pomeranian – Mini Spitz who passed away).
Ejy seemed to enjoy eating bananas a lot.
I was only 18 years old back then when this happened.
At that point, I didn’t think much about it.
Only later on in life, did I start to wonder if bananas are actually good for dogs.
So I went on a quest to find the answer to:
‘Can Pomeranians Eat Fruit?’
Now I know the answer to that and many more related questions on what fruits Pomeranians can and can’t eat.

Long story short:
I’ve learned a lot along the way.
Here you’ll discover what I’ve learned about Pomeranians and fruits.
Disclaimer: While I’ve learned a lot about which fruits Pomeranians can and can’t eat, it’s always a good idea to consult with your vet first.
That being said, let’s dive right in:

#1: Apples
Pomeranians can eat apples as long as you don’t give them the core or the seeds. In case your Pom is a bit overweight, you can feed him apple slices.
They make a great snack for senior Poms who have a slower metabolism. The benefits of apples are vitamins A and C. They ‘re good for the bones and tissue.
Can my Pomeranian eat green apples?
Pomeranians can eat green apples as these fruits offer the same benefits as red ones. Poms might not be as enthusiastic to chew on green apples however because of their sour taste.
Serving tip: Prepare the apple bites before serving them to your Pom. They should be cut into bite-sized chunks. Remove all seeds and get rid of the apple core as it poses a choking hazard. Since green apples are sour, it’s best to mix them with your Pom’s usual meal.
#2: Avocado
Pomeranians shouldn’t eat avocado. It contains a toxin called persin. Persin is not present in the inner part of the avocado as much as in the other part of the plant.
Still, no matter how small the amount of persin an avocado fruit contains, it can cause issues with your Pom’s well-being.
If your Pom eats more than a small bite of avocado, that could lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
What should I do if my Pomeranian eats avocado?
If your Pom happens to eat avocado by accident, don’t be quick to panic.
Observe how your Pom reacts and look out for any troubling symptoms that might indicate an emergency.
These include vomiting, diarrhea, or indications of abdominal discomfort.
If your Pomeranian experiences any of these, have a vet check him out immediately.

Contrary to what most people believe, eggplant is a fruit.
So the question is:
Can Pomeranians eat eggplant?
Pomeranians can eat eggplant. When given in moderation, eggplant is safe for Poms. For safety purposes, you should monitor your Pom after feeding him eggplant, to make sure he’s not allergic to it.
It would be best to give only organically-grown eggplant to your Pom.
Fun fact: Aubergine is also known as guinea squash.
When should you avoid giving eggplant to your Pom?
If your Pom suffers from arthritis or any other inflammation problems, you shouldn’t give him eggplant. Similarly, if your Pom is allergic to it, he should stay away from eggplant as it can worsen the allergic reaction.
Does your Pom have kidney problems? Then it’s a good idea to omit eggplant from his meal plan.
Last but not least, don’t give artificially-grown eggplant as it’s very likely it will contain pesticides. Even though organically-grown eggplant is more expensive, it’s worth it when it concerns your Pom’s health.
#7: Grapefruit
Pomeranians shouldn’t eat grapefruit. It’s considered toxic to Poms. Grapefruit has psoralen which can kill a Pom if the intoxication isn’t handled properly.
The citric acid can create problems with the digestive system.
Issues caused by grapefruit intake include vomiting, diarrhea, sensitivity to light, behavior changes, and depression.
What should I do if my Pom ate grapefruit?
You should know that cases of grapefruit ingestion require professional veterinary help.
This is the only way to make sure that any toxins will be removed from your Pom’s body.
If you spot your Pom eating grapefruit, taking the Pom to the vet is a no-brainer.
If severe toxicity situations are caused by grapefruit ingestion, blood transfusions might be needed.
While this doesn’t happen too often, it’s good to know, so you can protect your Pom and prevent such experiences.
#8: Grapes
Pomeranians shouldn’t eat grapes. Both grapes and raisins are very toxic to dogs.
Even if your Pom eats a few of them, it’s very dangerous because they can cause kidney failure.
That applies to dogs from both sexes, of various breeds, and age.

The result depends very much on whether you’ll manage to take your Pom to the vet in the upcoming two hours.
In up to two hours after ingestion, your vet will be able to induce vomiting.
This will prevent all the toxins to be absorbed from the whole amount of grapes your Pom ate.

#9: Guava
Pomeranians can eat guava. Your Pom can benefit from the nutrients of guava as long as you give it in moderate amounts.
The Pom will have vitamin and mineral intake when he eats guava as a snack. Introduce only small amounts to your Pom’s diet taking care not to give too much.
That’s because guava is high in carbohydrates and sugar.
#10: Mango
Pomeranians can eat mango. It’s safe to give your Pom sliced chunks of mango. It consists of 84% water, plus it is low in calories and has a lot of vitamins such as A, B6, C, and E.
It’s not safe to give your Pom the core of the mango as it’s toxic to dogs.
Mango is very nutritious for Pomeranians. Your Pom will most probably love it as a snack, as it has a sweet taste.
Serving tip: Even though mango is a soft fruit, don’t underestimate the potential danger of your Pom choking on it. Some dogs have a tendency to eat very fast and gulp every bite – small or big in front of them. Slice the mango into tiny pieces.
Caution: For maximum safety peel the mango and remove the pit. Remember to not overfeed your Pom as this will lead to tummy aches and diarrhea.
#11: Melon
Pomeranians can eat melon. Giving your Pom a moderate amount of cantaloupe melon is key. Melon is rich in vitamins A, B, and C.
Poms that suffer from diabetes or are overweight should eat cantaloupe melon only occasionally.
It’s important to remove the seeds and to cut the flesh in chunks before feeding it to your Pom. You should remove melon skin because it’s likely to contain bacteria that can infect your Pom.
#12: Olives
Pomeranians shouldn’t eat olives. The pits of olives contain high amounts of sodium which is unhealthy for Poms. The dangers of eating such olives include dehydration and an increase in blood pressure.
The last is very dangerous for overweight and elderly Poms. The olive pits are also a possible choking hazard for Poms.
Dog poison in olives
You should make sure your Pom doesn’t eat olives that have been covered in spices or stuffed with something.
They contain garlic.
Garlic is very toxic to dogs and could lead to a fatal case.
This information applies to canned and pickled olives.
What should I do if my Pomeranian eats olives?
If your Pomeranian ingests a lot of olives, you should immediately go to the vet. Ingesting a lot of olives can be dangerous, particularly because of the pits.
#13: Oranges
Pomeranians can eat oranges. If you want to ensure your Pom’s intake of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, you can give your Pom the flesh of an orange. Remember to not give the peel or any seeds.
Orange peel can negatively impact the digestive system.
Beware that oranges are high in sugar which means you shouldn’t give more than a slice occasionally.
Caution: Sugar in all its forms consists of glucose and fructose. The sugar contained in a large orange, for example, amounts to three teaspoons.
Serving tip: Refrain from giving your Pom more than 1 or 2 pieces a day. Any larger amount can increase the chances of obesity and other issues. All in all, orange pieces served as snacks should not be present in more than 10% in your Pom’s daily food intake.
If your Pom is prone to eating pretty much anything that he sees, he’s in danger of ingesting the orange peel.
The danger is that the peel can get stuck in the digestive tract.
The solution to that is surgery.

#14: Papaya
Pomeranians can eat papaya. It’s a great addition as a healthy snack to give to your Pom.
As with the seeds of oranges, apples, and tangerines, the papaya’s seeds should be removed from the bite-sized pieces you feed your Pom with.
These seeds have some amounts of cyanide.
#15: Pears
Pomeranians can eat pears. Although they’re safe fruits for Poms to eat, you shouldn’t feed your Pom with pears on a regular basis.
Your Pom can benefit from eating pears as a snack since they’re packed with nutrients. Pears are a great source of vitamin A, C, and fiber.
Caution: Be careful to not overfeed your Pom with pears. Even giving one pear counts as too much. For such a small dog, a slice or two would do. To be on the safe side, consult with your vet.
Can my Pomeranian eat canned pears?
Just like any other canned fruit, canned pears are not good for Pomeranians.
They contain a high amount of sugar which is far too much for a Pom’s digestive tract to handle.
Another con is that if your Pom eats canned pears, that might eventually lead to obesity.
Caution: If you’ve never before fed pears to your Pom, you must first talk about it with your vet. Based on your Pom’s overall health, the vet will give you advice tailored to your individual Pom, preventing any potential health issues.
#16: Pineapple
Pomeranians can eat pineapple. As long as you give raw bite-sized pieces without the peel and the crown, it’s fine.
This fruit contains plenty of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Also, it has an enzyme called bromelain which eases the absorption of proteins.
What about canned pineapple?
Don’t give canned pineapple to your Pom as it’s dangerous for dogs’ health.
Canned pineapple contains too much sugar than what’s bearable for a Pom’s digestive system.
Raw pineapple, on the other hand, has multiple benefits. It can equip your Pom with vitamin C, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, niacin, and riboflavin.
Your Pom will also get minerals such as magnesium, potassium, copper, iron, some amounts of calcium, zinc, and phosphorus.
Both the vitamins and minerals that your Pom can obtain from pineapple will boost your Pom’s immune system and help the digestive tract.
Caution: While it’s perfectly safe to give pieces of pineapple to your Pom, it can be very dangerous if you give large amounts. This has to do with the fact that pineapple is high in fiber and natural sugar.
Serving tip: Always serve peeled and sliced pineapple chopped in small bites.
#17: Raspberries
Pomeranians can eat raspberries. You can add raspberries as a snack or include them as an addition to your Pom’s meal.
For better health impact, choose organic ones. Buy them when red and use them in a period of no longer than three days.
Health benefits of raspberries include vitamins E, C, and K, fiber, copper, biotin, magnesium, folate, omega 3, manganese, and potassium.
This fruit is known to reduce inflammation.
Caution: Feed your Pom raspberries moderately. The micro-traces of natural xylitol they contain are toxic to dogs.
Additional info: For Pomeranians, raspberries are also a source of dietary fiber that stimulates the digestive system and prevents obesity. Raspberries contain strong antioxidants that decrease the chances of getting heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and cancer.
#18: Squash
Pomeranians can eat squash. Squash is a good addition to a balanced Pom’s diet. If you cook it, it’ll be easier for your Pom to digest it. Squash is high in fiber, low in calories, and full of nutrients and vitamins.
A big plus is the sweet taste it has which makes it so appealing to Poms.
What’s curious to know is that all of the different varieties of squash are safe for your Pom to eat.
There are some specifics and dangers you should be aware of though.
The biggest risk when it comes to squash lies in eating it raw.
Your Pom will have trouble digesting raw squash. This will result in diarrhea and vomiting which are signs of an upset stomach. That’s why it’s advisable to give your Pom steamed or lightly baked squash.
Caution: Never add any herbs or spices to the squash before you give it to your Pom. These include but are not limited to butter or oil, garlic or onions.
#19: Strawberries
Pomeranians can eat strawberries. These fruits have high amounts of fiber and vitamin C. Other healthy nutrients are magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, iron, manganese, vitamins E & K.
You should first ensure your Pom is not allergic to strawberries.
Signs of allergy include swollen lips and mouth irritation.
Serving tip: Cut the fruit into small, bite-size pieces. This is to prevent choking. Since Poms are tiny, what you can also do is mash the strawberries and make a puree. Then you can add it to your Pom’s food.
Additional info: By feeding your Pom strawberries, you can help slow down the Pom’s aging. You’ll also help to strengthen your Pom’s immune system. And not only that but eating strawberries will make your Pom’s teeth whiter (all of us Pom owners know the struggle).

#20: Tangerines
Pomeranians can eat tangerines. Tangerines aren’t toxic to Poms. As with other fruits, if eaten in large amounts, they can lead to gastrointestinal upset. That’s due to the high amounts of sugar they have.
The pros of giving your Pom tangerines lies in their content: vitamin C, potassium, beta-carotene, and folate.
Your safe bet would be to give no more than 2 to 3 pieces of tangerine to your Pom occasionally.
Caution: Based on what you know about tangerines, you might think that other citrus fruits such as lemons and limes are good for a Pom’s system. Wrong. Both lemons and limes contain a substance named psoralen which in combination with these fruits’ acids can endanger your Pom.
#21: Tomatoes
Tomatoes are fruits. And – no, Pomeranians shouldn’t eat tomatoes. The green parts of the plant are dangerous as they’re toxic to dogs. These parts contain solanine.
The ripened part of the tomato is considered safe. Even though a Pom can get sick only if he eats a large part of a tomato, it’s best to avoid feeding him tomato in general.
Can my Pomeranian eat tomato soup?
Avoid giving your Pom anything that contains tomatoes.
Tomato soup can cause your Pom to have an upset stomach and diarrhea. That applies to Poms with sensitive stomachs.
If you decide to give your Pom some tomato soup you should make sure it doesn’t contain much salt.
If your Pom has sodium intake, it won’t take too long before your Pom’s life is threatened by dehydration and intoxication.
Bonus: Watermelon
Pomeranians can eat watermelon. Watermelon is 92% water and is a good addition to your Pom’s meal on a hot sunny day. Your Pom will also benefit from the vitamins and nutrients watermelon contains.
Be careful that your Pom doesn’t ingest the seeds or rinds. They can cause serious health problems.
The healthy nutrients that watermelon contains include potassium, vitamins A, B6, and C.
The fiber in watermelon helps the digestive system of your Pom.
Watermelon makes for a great snack as it’s low in calories and sodium. Plus it’s fat and cholesterol-free. This makes it a better choice than snacks bought at the pet store.
Caution: Although watermelon has a lot of pros, it can also be dangerous for your Pom if not given correctly. If your Pom eats too much of it, he can get a tummy ache. What might follow is diarrhea.
Eating too many of the seeds can block the digestive tract
Poms are at risk because they’re smaller and it’s easier to happen.
If a Pom gets his teeth on the rind and ingests it without much chewing, he could get an intestinal blockage.
Signs to look out for include vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain.
If you spot any of these in 24 hours after your Pom has eaten the rinds, you must immediately go to the vet.
Before feeding your Pom watermelon, consult with your vet on how much you should give, if it’s suitable for your Pom considering his overall health, and when.
