When strawberries are bad for your Pomeranian
At the beginning of this article I mentioned that there are 2 cases when strawberries can be bad for your Pom. Actually there are 3 cases.
Let’s discuss all of them…
Case #1: When your Pomeranian eats too many strawberries
It’s not a secret that fruits contain a lot of sugar. Strawberries are no different.
If your pooch eats too much sugar this can lead too:
- Upset stomach.
- Weight problems.
- Metabolic changes.
- And so forth.
If you want to know more about how sugar can affect your Pom, check out this article on PetMD.
Long story short:
Too much sugar is bad for your Pom. Luckily, strawberries (and other fruits) contain fiber and other nutrients. This is why fruits are a lot healthier for your Pom than candy, fruity loops, or any other sugary snack.
But still, you shouldn’t overfeed strawberries to your Pom (further on you’ll discover the right amount to feed to your Pomeranian).
Case #2: When your Pomeranian is allergic too strawberries
While this is not common, some Pomeranians are allergic to strawberries.
This is why it’s best to consult with your vet before you give your Pom any new human food.
Signs that your Pomeranian is allergic to strawberries:
- Itchy skin.
- Difficulty breathing.
If you see any of these after your pooch ate strawberries, it’s best to contact your vet as soon as possible.
Case #3: When your Pom has a health condition
If your Pom has a health condition, human food can be dangerous.
In this case it’s always best to consult with your vet before you feed your Pom human food like strawberries.
If you don’t know if your Pomeranian has a health condition, it’s smart to do some tests.
The right amount of strawberries for your Pomeranian
You probably want to know the exact amount of strawberries to give to your Pom.
Unfortunately, I can’t help you with this (and everyone who tells you that there is a specific amount is lying).
But don’t worry…
There is a non-scientific rule that a lot of vets and dog experts tend to agree on. I’m talking about the 10% rule.
This rule simply states that your Poms daily calorie intake should consist of:
- Normal dog food (90%).
- Treats and snacks (10%).
Strawberries fall into the treats and snacks category. So it’s important that strawberries aren’t part of your Pom’s main diet.
Are you feeding strawberries to your Pom for the first time?
After you checked with your vet if your Pom can eat strawberries, it’s smart to start small.
This way your Pom can get used to eating strawberries.
Plus: if something doesn’t go as planned (for example it turns out that your Pom is allergic to strawberries), then the damage is as small as possible.
Further on you’ll discover some amazing strawberry treats, but first…
Interesting facts about strawberries
Did you know that strawberries can grow as big as apples?
I know, shocking right!
By now you know that you shouldn’t feed a gigantic strawberry like this to your Pom (if not, scroll up and read ‘When Strawberries are bad for your Pomeranian’).
And besides that, you’ve discovered how your Pomeranian can benefit from eating strawberries.
But here are some things that you probably didn’t know about strawberries:
- Strawberries contain 200 seeds on average.
- 94 out of 100 households in the US consume strawberries (hey, I told you that most people like strawberries!).
- Strawberries can be white, black, yellow, blue, purple, and red (although, I assume that you’re not surprised that red strawberries exist 😉 ).
- In California, they produce around one billion pounds of strawberries each year.
- If you take all the strawberries that are produced in California in one year, and you lay them down in a straight line (berry to berry), you’ll go around the world 15 times.
How does this relate to your Pomeranian?
To be honest, it doesn’t. I just wanted to put a smile on your face (most of my readers seem to enjoy these random yet interesting facts).
That being said, let’s focus on the serious stuff again…
The best way to feed strawberries to your Pom
The easiest way is as follows:
- It’s best to buy some organic fresh strawberries (don’t use packed or canned strawberries).
- Remove the green tops.
- Wash them really good.
- Slice them in small pieces (this helps your Pom with digesting and prevents your pooch from choking).
- Feed it to your Pom.
You can also make strawberries mash (simply use a fork, Nutribullet or any other blender).
Or if you want to get a little bit fancier, try one of these strawberry treats…
Pomeranian strawberry treat #1 (with watermelon)
You might want to use a smaller ice cube holder.
And if your Pom tends to chew aggressively, it’s best to avoid this treat since it might lead to your Pom breaking his teeth.
Reading tip: Can Pomeranians Eat Watermelon? The answer is obviously yes (otherwise I wouldn’t recommend this dog treat), but if you want to learn more about Pomeranians and watermelon check out this article.
Pomeranian strawberry treat #2 (with gelatine)
Again: it’s probably better to use a smaller ice cube holder. Or you can simply cut this strawberry treat in smaller pieces before you feed it to your Pom.

Besides ‘can my Pomeranian eat strawberries’, a lot of people ask:
- Can Pomeranians eat strawberry cheesecake?

It’s best to avoid these types of products altogether. Most of the time they contain a lot of sugar and preservatives. And sometimes chocolate and other ingredients that are toxic for your Pom.

The safest way to feed strawberries to your Pom is to buy fresh organic strawberries.
